Two Sides of ADHD Follow Through Struggles: External Internal in style of Yin and Yan

Why You’re Still Struggling to Follow Through

(Even When You Know What to Do)

If you’ve ever found yourself staring at a to-do list that you made with the best of intentions—determined to finally stay focused and follow through—but still ended the day wondering where the time went, you are definitely not alone. And, as a woman with ADHD, I get it! I’ve been there, and I’ve faced those follow-through struggles myself.

That pattern is one of the most frustrating and disheartening experiences for the professionals and entrepreneurs I work with.

You’re not lazy. You’re not broken. And you’re not lacking in effort or desire.

The real problem is…
You’re probably trying to solve the wrong problem.

The Root of the Follow-Through Struggle

Most of my clients come to me having already tried dozens of planners, apps, systems, time-blocking methods—you name it. You might have a shelf of half-used notebooks, a graveyard of calendar systems, and tried more “productivity hacks” than you care to admit.

And yet… follow-through still feels hard.

That’s because poor follow-through is rarely just about the system.
To create lasting change, we need to stop slapping surface-level solutions on much deeper problems.

The real reasons we struggle with performance and follow-through fall into two categories:
Internal root causes and external root causes.

Let me explain…

External Root Causes

These are the structural or systemic things:

  • Ineffective or absent task/project management systems
  • A calendar that doesn’t actually reflect your reality
  • No system for planning, reviewing, or adjusting your time and energy
  • Environmental issues, interruptions, or lack of support

External problems need external solutions: better systems, better tools, and better strategies designed for the way you work.

But that’s not the whole story.

Internal Root Causes

These are the mental and emotional roadblocks that I often say is “What’s between your ears that is getting in your way“.  Things like…

  • Perfectionism
  • Fear of failure or fear of success
  • Shame from past underperformance
  • Lack of belief in your ability to follow through
  • Patterns of avoidance, procrastination, or self-sabotage
  • Internalized messages about who you are and what you’re capable of
  • How you think about the things you need and want to do
  • How you think about time
  • How you think about how you are working or how you should work
If you’ve ever caught yourself avoiding something important that you actually care about, there’s a good chance there’s an internal root cause driving that behavior.

The Real Trap? Trying to Fix the Wrong Problem

Here’s what I see all the time:

People with internal challenges try to fix them with external tools.
And people with external challenges beat themselves up when they can’t push through.

It’s a recipe for shame, frustration, and a never-ending cycle of trying harder without getting further.

You don’t need more willpower.
You need the right solution for the real, root problem.

It’s Not About Pushing Harder—It’s About What’s in the Way

When follow-through keeps falling apart, it’s easy to think the answer is just to push harder.

But if you’ve been pushing and still not getting anywhere, it’s time to stop blaming your effort and your tools—and start looking at what’s really in your way.

When we shine a light on the real root cause (not just the symptoms), we can finally make meaningful, sustainable change. For Good.

That’s when you finally start following through.
That’s when you stop spinning your wheels.
That’s when you start creating real freedom and fulfillment in your life.
